📖 About Driftwood Public Library

The Driftwood Public Library has served the residents of Lynn and the surrounding rural communities of western Lawrence County since 1991. It takes its name from Driftwood — an abandoned post-Civil War African American settlement located about 2.5 miles south of Lynn, where formerly enslaved Black farmers who had 'drifted' into the community after emancipation built homes, a general store, a post office, and a thriving baseball team before the Great Depression scattered the community. The library moved into a new building on South Highway 25 in 2015, giving the community a modern, dedicated facility. A branch of the Lawrence County Library System, it provides Lynn's roughly 258 residents with free access to physical materials, public computers, Wi-Fi, and statewide digital resources — a vital anchor for this small town on the banks of the Black River in northeast Arkansas.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why is this library called the Driftwood Library?

The library is named after the historic Driftwood community, an African American settlement founded about 2.5 miles south of Lynn after the Civil War. Freed Black farmers who had worked on nearby plantations 'drifted' into the area — like driftwood on the Strawberry and Black Rivers — and built a close-knit community with a general store, post office, and a baseball team that thrived until the Great Depression. The library was named Driftwood in 1991 to honor that community's memory and history.

What are the library's hours, and why does Monday have longer hours?

Monday has the widest open window: 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Tuesday through Friday the library opens later, at 12:00 PM (noon), and closes at 5:00 PM. Saturday hours are 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The library is closed on Sunday. As a small community branch, call (870) 528-3506 or check lawrencecountylibrary.com to confirm any schedule changes.

Can I borrow eBooks from the Driftwood Library?

Yes. With a Lawrence County Library card you can borrow thousands of free eBooks, audiobooks, and digital magazines through the Arkansas Digital Library Consortium (ADLC), available 24/7 via the free Libby app (adlc.overdrive.com) on any smartphone, tablet, or computer.

Is this library part of a larger system, and are there other nearby branches?

Yes — the Driftwood Public Library is a branch of the Lawrence County Library System, headquartered at the Lawrence County Library in Walnut Ridge about 15 miles away. The system also includes branches in Black Rock, Imboden, Hoxie, and Portia. Your Lawrence County Library card is valid at all branches.
