📖 About Glendale Public Library — Main Library
The Glendale Public Library traces its roots to 1895, when Stanford graduate V.E. Messinger arrived with 400 books and made them freely available to his neighbors — launching the oldest public library in the Phoenix metro area. The Glendale Woman's Club managed the collection for decades until the City took formal control in 1922. Under head librarian Velma Teague, who served from 1935 until her death in 1969, the system grew steadily; the branch that bears her name opened in September 1971. The current Main Library — a 66,000-square-foot building on land formerly part of historic Sahuaro Ranch — opened in July 1987 and remains the flagship, housing the largest collection in the system, a 240-seat auditorium, and the IDEA Center for entrepreneurs. As a founding member of the Greater Phoenix Digital Library consortium, Glendale is part of one of the top OverDrive/Libby lending networks in the world.
