Founded in 1952 and run entirely by community volunteers, the Ninilchik Community Library is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit serving roughly 840 residents along the Sterling Highway on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula. In 2002 the library moved into a purpose-built facility that now houses nearly 10,000 volumes and circulates more than 10,500 items annually. Free Wi-Fi is accessible 24/7 from the parking lot, and three public computers, printing, and fax are available inside during open hours. The library holds an especially strong collection of Alaska and Kenai Peninsula local history materials, reflecting Ninilchik’s heritage as one of the oldest Russian-settler communities in Alaska — established in 1847 by Russian-American Company pensioners and their Native Alaskan families — and today a renowned sport-fishing destination on Cook Inlet.
