📖 About North Shelby Library

The North Shelby Library District was created in 1988 by an act of the Alabama Legislature and a majority vote of local residents to bring library services to a rapidly growing area of Shelby County that had no municipality and no public library — previously served only by a bookmobile, which was retired when the library opened. Designed by Williams Blackstock Architects, the 27,000-square-foot building sits on a wooded hillside site and features a stacked-stone exterior, a two-story central atrium with an elliptical stair, and clerestory windows that flood reading areas with natural light; a Donor Courtyard offers outdoor seating with views of the surrounding landscape. The library won an IIDA Interior Design Bronze Award in 2001. Governed by a five-member board of trustees as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, it serves approximately 50,000 residents and operates a branch at Mt. Laurel (111 Olmsted St., Birmingham, AL 35242). North Shelby participates in the Public Libraries of Shelby County shared Polaris catalog, giving cardholders access to all system locations.
