📖 About Alturas Main Library — Modoc County Library

The Alturas Main Library is the main branch and headquarters of the Modoc County Library, in the small city of Alturas in California's far-northeastern corner, high on the Modoc Plateau. Alturas had a reading room as early as 1886, and the Modoc County Free Library took shape in 1914 under an agreement tied to a $10,000 Carnegie grant on the condition the library be named for the county; its Classical Revival Carnegie building opened in 1918 and served until 1947. The library later moved from that building, and today the Alturas Main Library runs the county's print collection, public computers and internet access, along with a California Indian Library Collection and genealogy resources on microfilm. As a member of the NorthNet Library System, it gives cardholders access to Library-to-Go through Libby, a shared digital network of more than 100,000 eBooks, audiobooks and magazines.
