📖 About Benzonia Public Library

The Benzonia Public Library is the public library of Benzonia, a small Benzie County village in northwest Lower Michigan. It is housed in the Mills Community House, a brick building completed in 1909 that is the only remaining structure of Benzonia Academy — the school that grew out of Grand Traverse College, founded in 1863. The building originally held a girls' dormitory, dining room and headmaster's residence, and it was here that Pulitzer Prize-winning Civil War historian Bruce Catton spent part of his childhood while his father served as president of the academy. After the academy closed, the structure was converted to community use, the library leased the middle floor, and it has operated there ever since; the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1972 and still hosts concerts, plays and lectures. A local touch for visitors: when the blue flag is hanging on the porch, the library is open. Through the Michigan eLibrary (MeL) and the MeLCat statewide catalog, a Benzonia card also borrows eBooks and books from libraries across the state.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the Benzonia Public Library in the Mills Community House?

The Mills Community House is a brick building from 1909 that is the only surviving structure of Benzonia Academy. After the academy closed and the building was converted to community use, the library leased its middle floor and has operated there ever since. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Michigan State Historic Site.

What is the connection to historian Bruce Catton?

Bruce Catton, the Pulitzer Prize-winning Civil War historian, spent part of his childhood in the building that now houses the library — his father was president of Benzonia Academy. It is one of the notable literary and historical ties of this small Benzie County village.

What does the blue flag on the porch mean?

Staff hang a blue flag on the porch when the library is open. Because patrons often walk or are dropped off, the parking lot can look empty even during open hours, so the flag is the quick way to tell the library is staffed and open.

Can I get books from other Michigan libraries here?

Yes. Through MeLCat, the statewide catalog, and the Michigan eLibrary (MeL), a Benzonia card lets you request books from libraries across Michigan and borrow eBooks, audiobooks and research databases free from home.
