📖 About Mill Valley Public Library
The Mill Valley Public Library is the public library of Mill Valley, California, a wooded town at the foot of Mount Tamalpais in southern Marin County. The present building opened in September 1966 on the Old Mill site after voters approved a $325,000 bond by nearly 70 percent; it was designed by the firm of Wurster, Bernardi & Emmons, which won a 1969 American Institute of Architects award for the work, with landscape architect Lawrence Halprin shaping its setting among the redwoods. The building was deliberately canted six feet and its driveway shifted to avoid cutting down trees and to spare the limb of an ancient live oak. Inside are hand-crafted walnut furnishings by Art and Tripp Carpenter and original paintings by Ray Strong and Ludmilla Welch. The library is a member of MARINet, a consortium of Marin County libraries that share a single catalog, so a Mill Valley card borrows and reserves across the county.
