📖 About William E. Dermody Public Library
Carlstadt's path to a public library began in January 1944 when the local Mother's Club organized the community to pursue state library commission guidance, following Supervising Principal Edward F. Krom's inquiry in 1943. A borough referendum on November 7, 1944 formally established the library, and Miss Elizabeth Dittmer was appointed the first librarian in February 1946; the library opened on April 16, 1946. The current building at 420 Hackensack Street was dedicated on April 2, 1967, replacing earlier facilities. After the death of William E. Dermody on June 10, 1974, the Borough Council and Library Board renamed the institution the William E. Dermody Free Public Library of the Borough of Carlstadt, New Jersey, in his honor. The library holds more than 30,000 volumes and circulates over 75,000 items annually. It belongs to the Bergen County Cooperative Library System (BCCLS), which means a single Carlstadt card provides borrowing privileges at all member libraries across Bergen County.
