📖 About Bison Community Library
Bison was platted in 1888 by the Missouri Pacific Railroad and named for the American bison that once grazed the surrounding Kansas plains. Today the city is home to roughly 179 residents, making it one of Kansas's smallest communities with a dedicated public library. The Bison Community Library serves those residents and the broader rural Rush County area from its location at 202 Main Street, offering a free borrower's card and access to the Central Kansas Library System (CKLS) — the regional cooperative that links small communities across north-central Kansas to shared resources, interlibrary loan, and digital tools. The library's compact afternoon-and-morning schedule is tailored to the rhythms of a farming community: afternoons Monday through Wednesday and Friday, plus a Thursday morning session. A notable piece of local history: in 1912, one of the most destructive tornadoes on record in Kansas struck Bison, leaving two dead and eleven injured — a reminder of the resilience that defines small-town Plains communities. The Kansas State Library provides Bison cardholders with access to the statewide eCard and digital databases through CKLS.
