📖 About Stewart Public Library
Stewart Public Library serves the towns of Anson (including both North Anson and Anson villages) and Embden in Somerset County, a stretch of the upper Kennebec River valley where agriculture and forest industry have long defined the pace of life. The library's roots go back to 1899 as the Anson Public Library — later renamed the Foster Public Library — and the current building was acquired after the catastrophic 1913 fire that leveled much of downtown North Anson. The Stewart Library Association was formally incorporated under Maine state statute in 1922 and was recognized in 2023 for 100 years of continuous incorporation by Maine Secretary of State Shana Bellows. Volunteers have kept the library running across every decade since, with longtime treasurer Beverly Tripp having served for more than 40 years. Today the library holds roughly 9,400 volumes, circulates about 2,500 items per year, and connects Somerset County residents to the Maine InfoNet Download Library for cloudLibrary eBooks and the Digital Maine Library's broad suite of statewide databases.
