McCracken is a small community in Rush County on the western Kansas plains. The town's founding stake was driven in December 1886, when it was platted along the newly arriving Missouri-Pacific Railroad and named for J. K. McCracken, one of its first trustees. Within its first year the town had a bank, grocery stores, a newspaper and a theater. Today McCracken has a population of roughly 262 residents, and the public library at 303 Main Street remains a community anchor, housing a collection of more than 10,000 volumes along with a collection of early McCracken history memorabilia. The library belongs to the Central Kansas Library System (CKLS), which supports library services across 17 counties in central Kansas, and patrons have access to the CKLS shared catalog and to Kansas State Library digital resources including the Sunflower eLibrary.
