📖 About Klamath County Library — Main Branch
The Klamath County Library Service District was born on December 12, 1904, when the local Woman's Club organized a public reading room that opened in the Melhase Building on November 26, 1905. After outgrowing two rented spaces, the system received a Carnegie grant — the first installment arriving in late December 1913 — and opened a purpose-built Carnegie Library on October 1, 1916. By 1941 the county library served 28 communities and 39 schools, circulating more books through its branch network than any Oregon county library outside of Multnomah County. A bookmobile launched in 1929 carried 200 books in a modified Ford truck. The city and county systems merged in 1969; a 1975 addition doubled the library's size. The current Main Branch at 126 S. Third Street anchors a 12-location district that includes 3D printing, a Seed Library, a Library of Things, and a dedicated Law Library, all serving a high-desert region famous for Crater Lake and world-class fly fishing on the Upper Klamath Lake.
