📖 About Greensburg Hempfield Area Library
The Greensburg Hempfield Area Library (GHAL) traces its origins to 1935, when the Concord Club and Greensburg College Club founded a small books-only library that opened the following year on Maple Avenue. After several moves, GHAL settled in 1969 into its current building on South Pennsylvania Avenue — formerly a 1912 U.S. Post Office — whose restored windows, distinctive crayon-themed children's pillars, and vintage display cabinet of local memorabilia give it an atmosphere unlike any modern branch. A major renovation in 2021 updated mechanical systems, circulation desk, and lighting while preserving the building's historic character. GHAL belongs to a federated system of 23 public libraries in Westmoreland County, served by a shared Polaris catalog at wclibraries.org. The library offers a robust museum-pass program covering eight regional sites — including the Heinz History Center and Westmoreland Museum of American Art — and maintains a genealogy collection featuring microfilm, digitized local databases, and MyHeritage access for family researchers.
