📖 About Hoyt Main Library

Hoyt Main Library stands at the center of the Public Libraries of Saginaw system, tracing its origins to an 1836 school library and its present building to a $100,000 bequest from Saginaw philanthropist Jesse Hoyt. The library opened to the public on November 1, 1890, constructed with Bay Port limestone and Lake Superior red sandstone by the Boston firm Van Brunt & Howe. In 1926 the system was formally unified when Hoyt, the Butman-Fish Memorial Library, and the East Side Public Library merged. After more than a century of service without a complete overhaul, the building underwent its first full renovation between 1996 and 2001. The Main Library anchors the four-branch PLS district, offering the system's widest range of collections, meeting rooms, Government Document Depository access, computers, public Wi-Fi, and digital services including Libby and the Michigan eLibrary.
