📖 About Manchester City Library

Manchester City Library was officially established on November 8, 1854, when Mayor-Elect Frederick Smyth proposed a free public library for the city during his inaugural address. It succeeded the members-only Manchester Atheneum (founded 1844), incorporating that collection into the new civic institution. The current Carpenter Memorial Building, constructed of Concord granite and marble in an Italian Renaissance style, was dedicated on November 18, 1914 before a crowd of more than 5,000 people. At 150 feet long and 90 feet deep, it cost approximately $355,000 to build — equivalent to roughly $11.4 million today. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Victory Park Historic District. With approximately 225,000 items, Manchester City Library holds the largest collection of any public library in New Hampshire, serving the state's most populous city with two locations: the main Carpenter Memorial Building and the West Branch.
