The Rufus A. Lewis Regional Library honors the remarkable legacy of Rufus A. Lewis (1906–1999), a Montgomery educator, activist and politician whose voter-registration work and civil rights organizing helped reshape American democracy. Lewis was a founding member of the Montgomery Improvement Association, where — at the group's very first meeting in 1955 — he nominated a then-unknown 26-year-old pastor named Martin Luther King Jr. as president. He later co-founded the Alabama Democratic Conference, served in the Alabama House of Representatives, and became the first Black U.S. Marshal for Alabama's Middle District under President Carter. Montgomery recognized his contributions in the 1990s by renaming both a street and this library branch in his honor. Located at 3095 Mobile Highway in west Montgomery, the branch holds the distinction of being the only MCCPL location open until 9pm on weekdays, making it the go-to branch for evening visitors across the city.
