Established in 1925 inside a building that once housed the law offices of Governor Thomas Seay (Alabama's governor 1886–1890), Hale County Library has grown through two expansions: a 1980s addition on the east side and a 2005 west-wing renovation of a former gas station, law office, and bank. The library maintains roughly 12,000 items — books, videos, audio books, magazines, local newspapers, and genealogical materials — all available free to county residents. Librarians are on hand to help patrons locate materials and navigate the internet and reference databases. Hale County is steeped in cultural history: photographer Walker Evans and writer James Agee documented its sharecroppers here in 1936 for Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, and Auburn University's Rural Studio community-design program continues to operate in the county today.
