📖 About Seldovia Public Library
Seldovia Public Library is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public library that has served Seldovia, Alaska since 1935, making it one of the oldest continuously operating libraries on the Kenai Peninsula. The original library was housed in the old schoolhouse under the direction of Susan Bloch English. The current facility opened in 1979 in the city multipurpose building, funded by a State of Alaska grant. Seldovia itself sits on Kachemak Bay southwest of Homer, accessible only by air or water; the 1964 Good Friday earthquake caused the land to drop six feet, and the waterfront was subsequently rebuilt on higher ground. Today the library holds over 11,000 books, magazines, and movies, maintains a dedicated Alaskana Collection room and a Seldovia Archive Reading Room for historic materials from 1900–1970, and offers four public computers with free wireless internet. Circulation loans books and magazines for three weeks and movies for one week, with phone and email renewals available.
