The Story of the Library in Wahiawa
The Wahiawā Public Library opened its longtime building at 820 California Avenue in July 1965 and served central Oʻahu for roughly 60 years, making it one of the oldest branches in the Hawaii State Public Library System outside the downtown Hawaiʻi State Library. The building permanently closed on May 4, 2025 to make way for a new facility.
While the new library is built, HSPLS operates a temporary pop-up branch inside the Wahiawā Shopping Center (anchored by Foodland and Goodwill) at 823 California Avenue, offering books, seating, public computers, Wi-Fi, and children's programming. The replacement will be a roughly 12,000-square-foot library within the $42.5 million Wahiawā Center for Workforce Excellence — co-located with University of Hawaiʻi community college classrooms — with completion expected in spring 2027.
