📖 About Asotin County Library — Downtown Branch
Library service in Clarkston traces to 1902 when the Women's Guild of the Episcopal Church established a community reading room. The original Carnegie-funded library building — a two-story brick structure dedicated September 13, 1913 at 6th and Chestnut Streets — served patrons for nearly 80 years before being placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 (it now houses the Clarkston School District's Career & Technical Education program). The Asotin County Rural Library District organized in 1964–65 to consolidate service across the county. The current Downtown Branch at 417 Sycamore Street was designed by architect Robert F. Broyles and dedicated in February 1993, partly funded by the Friends of Asotin County Library. A mezzanine added in 2018 was dedicated as 'Trina's Mezzanine' in honor of longtime staff member Trina Schlee, and a 2020 remodeling completed the modern facility with a signature service desk crafted from reclaimed oak beaming. The library participates in the Valnet Consortium, a shared catalog of 48 public and school libraries across southeastern Washington and north-central Idaho.
