📖 About Howard Miller Public Library
The Howard Miller Public Library came to life through an act of community philanthropy unusual in Michigan's library history. In the early 1990s, community member Dekker envisioned a new public library for Zeeland and brought the idea to Phil and Jack Miller of the Howard Miller Clock Company. The Miller brothers offered a $1.25 million gift on behalf of the company, contingent on three conditions: a public vote, additional community fundraising, and the library carrying the Howard Miller name. Volunteer fundraiser Hoogland raised more than $1.1 million, the city council voted unanimously in favor, and the library opened in 1995. The clock company — founded in 1926 by Howard C. Miller in Zeeland, making it one of the world's largest clock manufacturers — closed its Zeeland operations in recent years, but the library it endowed continues to serve the community. Today the building features decorative stained glass windows, study rooms, and a Library of Things lending collection. An endowment fund established at opening continues to provide operating support; in 2016 it funded an expansion of the children's area. The library participates in Michigan eLibrary (MeL) and uses BiblioCommons for its online catalog.
