📖 About Adair County Public Library
The Adair County Public Library opened on July 1, 1986, in downtown Kirksville after voters approved a tax levy that spring — finally giving the county a fully funded public library. Its roots go deeper: the Sojourner's Club, a women's literary and civic organization, had operated Kirksville's only lending library for 70 years before the county library was established, and the city purchased the Sojourner's collection to seed the new institution. A purpose-built 9,800-square-foot facility opened on November 1, 1989 at One Library Lane, just south of Swimming Pool Park on Highway 63. Today the library holds more than 56,000 volumes and circulates over 231,000 items a year to a service population of about 25,600 residents. Part of the Missouri Evergreen consortium, its catalog is shared across dozens of Missouri public libraries, and digital resources through Hoopla, Cloud Library, and EBSCO extend the collection around the clock.
