📖 About Morton County Library
Morton County Library has been the community anchor for Elkhart and surrounding Morton County since the early twentieth century. For decades the collection moved from room to room until the 1930s, when a WPA work project constructed the Adobe City Hall and the library settled into a dedicated room at its south end. In 1968, the city board voted to transform the library into a county-wide system and affiliate with the Southwest Kansas Library System (SWKLS), extending free access to all Morton County residents; the collection relocated from City Hall into the former post office building, its current home at 410 Kansas Avenue. Morton County sits in the extreme southwest corner of Kansas — the Dust Bowl's heart — where Elkhart serves as the county seat of a vast agricultural region. SWKLS membership connects patrons to shared resources and the Kansas State Library's digital offerings, including downloadable eBooks and audiobooks available with a free Kansas Library eCard.
