📖 About Dickinson County Library
Dickinson County Library's story begins in the 1870s, when a collection attached to Pioneer School in Quinnesec offered the region's first organized reading. In 1901, Andrew Carnegie provided funding for a permanent library building in Iron Mountain on condition the municipality guarantee its ongoing operation; the Carnegie Library opened in 1902. The modern county system was formally established in 1961 to extend services to all Dickinson County residents, and in 1969 the Main Branch relocated to its current home at 401 Iron Mountain Street. Two additional branches serve Norway (Solomonson Branch, rebuilt after a 1977 fire) and Felch (North Dickinson Branch, opened 2004). The library is a member of the Superiorland Library Cooperative, placing it within a network of 35 Upper Peninsula libraries and connecting patrons to Michigan's statewide digital resources through MeL. A local-history collection of photographs, city directories, and digitized newspapers documents Menominee Range mining heritage and the families who built Iron Mountain.
