📖 About Bergenfield Public Library
Bergenfield's first lending library opened in a single room at Mutual Hall on Front and Van Houten Streets at the close of World War I. Over the following decades it grew from one to four rooms at Town Hall, then relocated to Borough Hall in 1936, before the Board of Trustees and the Friends of the Library — organized in 1961 — launched a drive for a purpose-built facility. Construction at 50 West Clinton Avenue began in 1967 and the new library opened in 1968. A 2005 expansion dedicated a new children and teen space, paving the way for expanded English as a Second Language tutoring, public computer access, and adult career services. Today the library holds over 135,000 volumes, circulates nearly 275,000 items per year, and serves a population of about 27,000 residents. It is a member of BCCLS (Bridging Communities, Connecting Library Services), the consortium of all 62 Bergen County public libraries, giving cardholders access to a vast shared catalog and digital lending through Libby, Kanopy, and Hoopla.
