📖 About Southgate Veterans Memorial Library
The Southgate Veterans Memorial Library traces its roots to July 16, 1951, when the North Line Branch of the Wayne County Library System opened in a modest 40-by-60-foot building at 13703 Northline Road with just 3,500 books. As Southgate grew — it incorporated as a city in October 1958 — the library took the Southgate name and kept pace: a new building opened at 14680 Dix-Toledo Road on April 11, 1966, financed in part by a federal grant. On November 11, 1984, Mayor James Kandrevas dedicated the library to local veterans in a brief ceremony that unveiled the nameplate still on the facade today. In November 1994, residents voted to approve a $1.6 million bond; thirteen months of construction later, a 1997 dedication ceremony opened the expanded 21,000-square-foot building with two large meeting rooms, five study rooms, and a storytime room that have made it the community anchor it is today. The library belongs to The Library Network (TLN), connecting cardholders to millions of shared items across Wayne County and Southeast Michigan.
