The Darlington County Library has served the seat of Darlington County at 204 North Main Street since March 1988, but its roots stretch back to the 1880s when Captain Henry Thompson launched a guards' reading room that eventually became a fully public institution. It is the administrative headquarters of a four-branch system and a proud member of the statewide SCLENDS consortium, giving one library card access to over two million items across South Carolina.

📖 About Darlington County Library
Darlington County Library traces its origin to the early 1880s, when Captain Henry Thompson established the Darlington Guards Library for the use of guard members and their families. By 1912 the collection had been donated to the Civic League, a women's public-service organization, and in 1922 the facility was expanded. A large addition planned in 1928 was delayed by the Depression, but the WPA helped the library double in size in 1933–34. Bookmobile service — championed by the Farm Women Council — was added in 1936. The modern county system took shape in 1968 when the Darlington and Hartsville libraries merged to form the Darlington County Library System, later adding the historic Society Hill Library (established 1822, one of South Carolina's oldest) and the Lamar Library. The library has been at its current 204 N. Main Street address since March 1988. In recent years it joined SCLENDS, the statewide library consortium providing access to over 2 million items and 24+ member libraries, and is part of the Palmetto OverDrive consortium for e-book and e-audiobook borrowing through Libby.
