📖 About Walton-DeFuniak Library

The Walton-DeFuniak Library was established on December 20, 1887, when local women from the Ladies' Aide Society — later reorganized as the Ladies' Library Association — raised $580 to open a reading room for DeFuniak Springs. Alice Fellows became the first salaried librarian in 1896 and served in that role until 1926. The library operated on patron subscription fees until the 1960s, when local government assumed financial responsibility, and it was officially renamed the Walton-DeFuniak Library in 1975. A complementary rear addition completed in 1984 expanded the original wood-frame structure without disrupting its historic character. Today the library is a branch of the Walton County Public Library System and holds more than 25,000 volumes alongside one of the collection's most distinctive features: a 100-piece antique weapons and armor collection originally belonging to Professor Kenneth Bruce of Palmer College, including European Crusade-era weapons, Japanese handguns, African spears and 18th-century Kentucky muskets. The library's lakeside setting on 3 Circle Drive, at the edge of DeFuniak Springs' Victorian-era historic district, draws visitors as much for its history as for its books.
