📖 About Coral Gables Branch Library
The Coral Gables Branch Library traces its origins to the Coral Gables Woman's Club, which opened a reading room in November 1927 with 300 donated books and 100 volumes from William Jennings Bryan's personal collection. After earlier homes at the Douglas Entrance and a 1937 WPA-funded building, the branch joined the Miami-Dade system and moved into its current 28,000-square-foot home at University Drive and Segovia Street, dedicated on March 23, 1969. Architects Edward T. Rempe and Wray G. Succop designed the Mediterranean Revival structure using native Florida Keys keystone, Honduran mahogany doors, Spanish clay tiles and wrought iron, crowned by a main reading room with 15-foot beamed ceilings. A 1970 ceramic-tile mural by Katherine Pancoast depicting local landmarks and native flora earned Coral Gables Historic Landmark designation alongside the building on May 20, 2010. Following a $6.8 million, two-year restoration, the branch closed in April 2021 and reopened on Segovia Street on May 22, 2023 with new windows, systems and furnishings. Roughly 35% of its collection was brand-new at reopening.
