📖 About Francis Parkman Branch

The Francis Parkman Branch opened on April 16, 1931, built to serve the growing neighborhoods lining Oakman Boulevard near Linwood, close to today's Russell Woods district. Designed in an early Tudor style, the building sits on a distinctive triangular site and carries its half-timbered look inside as well as out, with timbered interior detailing that matches the Tudor exterior. It was the eighteenth branch opened by the Detroit Public Library and among the first laid out according to the system's regional plan. The branch is named in honor of Francis Parkman, one of nineteenth-century America's most prominent historians, known for chronicling the struggle between England and France for control of North America. Today the neighborhood library offers programs such as its summer reading events and a letter-writing station for exchanging handwritten notes among neighbors.
