📖 About Bowen Branch

The Bowen Branch opened in December 1912 as one of Detroit's first Carnegie-funded libraries, built in an English academic style of red brick with buff Ohio stone. It is named for Herbert Bowen, an early member of the Detroit Library Commission. Standing at the corner of West Vernor Highway and West Grand Boulevard, it is one of the city's oldest branch libraries. Today Bowen carries a special mission of serving the largely Spanish-speaking population of Southwest Detroit, offering materials in both English and Spanish. After a multi-year closure, the branch reopened following a refresh that included the installation of air conditioning, restoring a vital gathering place for the neighborhood.
