📖 About Hughes Main Library
The Hughes Main Library is the central library of the Greenville County Library System, opened October 7, 2002 on Heritage Green, downtown Greenville's cultural campus alongside the art and history museums. Public library service in Greenville dates to May 20, 1921, when the Greenville Public Library Association opened with 500 volumes in a vacant storage room on East Coffee Street; two years later, in October 1923, the system launched the "Pathfinder," credited as the first bookmobile in the South. Today the eleven-location system centers on this main library, whose South Carolina Room houses one of the Upstate's richest genealogy and local-history collections — books, manuscripts, microform, periodicals, maps, photographs and newspapers — and displays the restored Hollingsworth-Magill Memorial Globe. Alongside the research collections, the building offers a children's Play and Learn Center, meeting and conference rooms, a computer training lab, laptop lending and a Friends Shop.
