About Mary Riley Styles Public Library
The Mary Riley Styles Public Library has served the “Little City” of Falls Church, Virginia, for over 125 years — making it one of the oldest continuously operating public libraries in Northern Virginia. Founded in 1899 by the Falls Church Village Improvement Society, the library grew under the dedicated stewardship of Mary Riley Styles (1869–1946), who chaired the Library Committee of the Falls Church Woman’s Club for over 25 years beginning in 1919. When Mrs. Styles passed away in 1946, her children donated the family’s Riley farmland at 120 N. Virginia Avenue for a permanent library building, which opened on July 4, 1958. The library was formally renamed in her honor in 1977.
Today the library occupies a modern 25,727 sq. ft. LEED Silver-certified facility, following a landmark $10.3 million renovation and 6,600 sq. ft. expansion completed in September 2021 — the third major renovation in the library’s history, funded by a 2016 voter-approved bond. The redesigned building by BKV Group features a new corner entrance at Park and Virginia Avenues, dedicated youth and teen spaces on the lower level, an expanded Falls Church History Room, a Memory Lab for self-service digitization, full accessibility upgrades, and bright, welcoming spaces for all ages. The library proudly serves approximately 15,000 residents of the independent City of Falls Church.
✨ Fine-Free Library since July 1, 2020! No overdue fines on any materials. Items 30 days overdue are automatically billed — but the fee is removed when the item is returned in good condition. Renew up to twice online, by text at (703) 520-2484, or by phone at (703) 248-5031.
