📖 About Darlington County Library

The Darlington County Library System dates to the early 1880s, when Captain Henry Thompson founded the Darlington Guards Library for guard members and their families, later opening it to the wider community. In 1912 the collection was donated to the Civic League, and by 1933–34 the Works Progress Administration helped double the building's size. Bookmobile service began in 1936, largely through the Farm Women Council. In 1968 the Darlington and Hartsville libraries merged to form the Darlington County Library System, which also serves the historic Society Hill Library (1822) and the Lamar Library. The main Darlington branch has occupied its current location at 204 North Main Street since March 1988. In 2024 the system joined SCLENDS — South Carolina's statewide shared library network — giving every cardholder access to over 2 million items across more than 24 member libraries and a free mobile app.
